PREVENT Waste Alliance project: Plastic credits for inclusive and transparent circularity

The ‘Plastic credits for inclusive and transparent circularity’ project, managed by Circular Action Hub and partners, was selected by the PREVENT Waste Alliance as one of eight global innovative and sustainable solutions that contribute to a circular economy in low- and middle-income countries.

Started in January 2021 and running until June 2022, BVRio’s project will focus on the development of tools and practices to contribute to the development of plastic credit markets worldwide. The Circular Action Hub will focus on providing performance-based incentives to local partners through the purchase of circular credits from the plastic waste collection operations conducted.

In addition, the sale of Plastic Credits will generate revenue for those affected by COVID-19. Waste pickers in developing countries are currently suffering from restrictions created by lockdown measures, the reduction in economic activity resulting in lower rates of waste collection, reduced prices paid for recyclable materials, and the direct impact of the virus on their health.

Our interventions are designed with the aim of providing frontline informal workers with dignified, safe, well-paying livelihoods, and all local partners embody worker empowerment in their missions. The ‘Plastic Credits for inclusive and transparent circularity’ project mobilises financing directly for investing in expansion of logistical systems and enabling monetisation of previously worthless plastic-waste streams, all while providing frontline-workers requisite personal protective equipment and ensuring hygiene standard operating systems.

The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and involves a consortium of 12 organisations located in 10 countries, including BVRio, Rodiek, Nehlsem, Wuppertal Institut, Yunus Environment Hub, BlackForest Solutions, cirplus, EntreAmigos rePurpose, and local partners in Brazil, Mexico, India and Vietnam.
